The ground

The Sierra Maestra runs along the south coast of eastern Cuba, and Pico Turquino at 1,974 m is the island's high point. The approach climbs from coffee slopes into genuine cloud forest — epiphytes, tree fern, the Cuban trogon and the tiny bee hummingbird — and from the summit ridge the Caribbean opens south with no land between you and Jamaica.

This is inquire-only for compliance reasons rather than safety ones. US persons cannot travel to Cuba for tourism; travel must fall within one of the authorised categories, and the itinerary has to be structured accordingly. Guests from other jurisdictions face a different picture, but the routing still runs through us.

The walking itself is honest work: humid, steep in sections, and muddy for much of the year. Two nights on the mountain with Cuban guides from the park, then down through the coffee communities on the northern slope.

Shape of the days

A shape, not a script. Order and pacing move with weather, permits, and how the first days actually go.

  1. Stage 1

    Compliance screening

    We establish your nationality and residency position and, for US persons, whether a qualifying authorised category applies. We structure or decline on that basis before anything is booked.

  2. Stage 2

    Santiago or Bayamo base

    City days in Santiago de Cuba or Bayamo, acclimatisation walks, and the drive to the trailhead at Santo Domingo or Las Cuevas.

  3. Stage 3

    Pico Turquino

    Two- to three-day cloud-forest approach and summit with authorised park guides, sleeping in mountain shelters.

  4. Stage 4

    Coffee slopes and exit

    Descent through the coffee-farming communities of the northern slope, then return to Santiago.

Conditions

Warm and humid, 22–30 °C at the base and noticeably cooler and wetter on the ridge. November to April is drier; the rest of the year turns the approach to deep mud. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Fitness bar

Moderate to challenging. Steep, slick gradient with roughly 1,500 m of cumulative ascent over the mountain section, in humidity, carrying a day pack. No technical ground.

Best months

November through April. Avoid the June-to-November hurricane window.

Private or small group

Private, arranged case by case. Guides on the mountain are assigned by the park, so the summit section is guided by park staff alongside your lead guide.

What to bring

Boots that cope with deep mud, quick-dry layers, and a light warm layer for the ridge at 1,974 m. Carry cash: card acceptance is unreliable and the mountain shelters take nothing else.

Access and permits

The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.

  • US law prohibits travel to Cuba for tourist activities. Travel by US persons must fit an authorised category and be documented accordingly; we structure to that or we decline.
  • We do not transact with entities on the Cuba Restricted List. Where that constrains lodging, we use private-sector alternatives.
  • Pico Turquino requires park-assigned guides. Independent ascent is not permitted.

What the price reflects

Quoted on inquiry. The structure — and therefore the cost — depends on your jurisdiction and on which authorised category, if any, applies. We will not publish a booking price for an itinerary that cannot be sold as leisure travel to part of our readership.
