Dominica has the highest concentration of potentially active volcanoes of anywhere in the world, and the Boiling Lake is the visible consequence — a flooded fumarole about 60 m across, grey and churning, second in size only to Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand. Getting there is a 13 km round trip through the Valley of Desolation, six to eight hours of sustained mud, steep ridges, sulphur vents, and river crossings. It is the hardest day hike in the Eastern Caribbean and the failure rate is meaningful.
The Waitukubuli National Trail runs 183 km in fourteen segments the length of the island — Waitukubuli is the Kalinago name for Dominica — and the segments through the Morne Trois Pitons World Heritage site are the ones worth walking. The island's Kalinago Territory in the east is the last substantial Carib community in the Caribbean.
