What El Salvador is actually good at

Santa Ana — Ilamatepec in Nahuat — is the country's highest volcano at 2,381 m, and the payoff is a sulphurous turquoise crater lake several hundred metres below the rim with Izalco's black cone and Lago de Coatepeque in the same frame. It takes about two hours to reach. Worth being precise: it is the highest volcano, not the highest point, which is Cerro El Pital at 2,730 m and not a volcano at all.

The coast faces almost due south into the Southern Hemisphere swell window, which is why the surf season runs March to October with warm water and no wetsuit. The waves are right-hand points over cobble and rock — Punta Roca is the serious one, El Tunco and El Zonte more forgiving. Inland, Lago Suchitlán is a reservoir rather than a natural lake: the Cerrón Grande dam flooded the Lempa valley in the 1970s, and the drowned valleys you paddle between are the result.

Access and permits

Country-level constraints that decide whether a date is possible.

  • The Santa Ana ascent has historically run as escorted groups leaving at set morning times from the Cerro Verde trailhead, with park and tourist-police arrangements. The rim closes on elevated volcanic activity.
  • There is no lifeguard cover on most of the surf coast, and rip currents at the points are strong. Our guides carry rescue equipment and set the go or no-go call.
  • Suchitlán's water level is managed for hydroelectricity and varies through the year, changing which channels are navigable.

Most private journeys cross a border — the Atacama to Uyuni crossing, Copán into Guatemala, Iguazú from both sides. Tell us the shape you want and we will say whether the logistics hold together.
