The ground

The Carretera Austral is Ruta 7 — roughly 1,240 km of mostly gravel through Aysén, stitched together by ferries because the fjords make a continuous road impossible. It was not completed as a through route until the 1980s and long stretches still feel provisional, which is the appeal.

The set pieces are real: the Capillas de Mármol, marble caverns on Lago General Carrera worn into fluted chambers you enter by small boat; the Queulat hanging glacier pouring out between two rock walls; and the confluence at Puerto Bertrand where the Baker river runs an impossible colour.

Weather runs the schedule. Ferries cancel, rivers rise, and the road turns to washboard. We build spare hours into every leg because trying to hold a fixed timetable here just produces a bad trip.

Shape of the days

A shape, not a script. Order and pacing move with weather, permits, and how the first days actually go.

  1. Days 1–3

    North from Puerto Montt

    Ferry into the fjords, Pumalín Douglas Tompkins park, and the alerce forests — trees over 3,000 years old.

  2. Days 4–6

    Queulat and Aysén

    The Ventisquero Colgante hanging glacier, Puyuhuapi hot springs, and the long gravel run south through Coyhaique.

  3. Days 7–9

    Lago General Carrera

    Marble caverns by boat, Puerto Río Tranquilo, and the Exploradores glacier viewpoint.

  4. Days 10–12

    Baker and Patagonia Park

    The Baker confluence, Cochrane, and Patagonia National Park's Chacabuco valley — guanaco, huemul, and the rewilding corridor — then exit via Balmaceda.

Conditions

Cool and wet. Summer highs of 12–20 °C, rain likely in any month, and wind that arrives without warning. November to March is the operating window; ferries run reduced schedules outside it and some sections become impassable.

Fitness bar

Moderate. This is a road journey with day walks of two to five hours — the Queulat glacier trail, the Chacabuco valley, glacier viewpoints. Long vehicle days on rough gravel are the real fatigue.

Best months

November through March. December to February is warmest and busiest; March often has the best light and the fewest people.

Private or small group

Private vehicle and driver-guide throughout, lodge and estancia based. Ferries booked well in advance. Small-group departures up to six.

What to bring

A proper rain shell and warm layers for a road where summer means 12–20 °C and wind arrives without warning. Boots for muddy day walks, and something dry to change into after the glacier trail. Phone coverage disappears for long stretches.

Access and permits

The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.

  • Ferry capacity on the northern fjord legs is limited and books out for the summer months. The itinerary is designed around sailings, not against them.
  • Fuel stops are far apart and long stretches have no phone coverage. Our vehicles carry spare fuel and a satellite communicator.

What the price reflects

$8,800–12,800 for twelve days reflects a private vehicle and driver-guide over 1,200 km of gravel, all ferries, and the good lodges — of which there are not many on this road. Self-drive is possible and much cheaper, with the ferry logistics and mechanical risk transferred to you.

Bands are per person sharing and move with party size, season, and lodge choice. Nothing is confirmed until it is confirmed in writing. How we price.
