The ground
Arenal's crater is closed and has been for years. There is no summit here and anyone offering one is either mistaken or lying. The volcano erupted continuously from 1968 until 2010 and has been in a resting phase since. What you walk is the hardened 1968 and 1992 flows, where pioneer vegetation is slowly retaking the andesite, with the cone above you and Lake Arenal behind.
Monteverde is the counterweight: cloud forest on the continental divide at 1,440 m, wind-shaped and dripping, where the resplendent quetzal nests roughly March to June and the wild avocado trees it feeds on set the calendar. Hanging bridges get you into the canopy layer where most of the activity is.
The two are three hours apart by road, or a jeep–boat–jeep across Lake Arenal that is both faster and more interesting.

Days 1–3
La Fortuna and Arenal

Day 4
Crossing
Jeep–boat–jeep across Lake Arenal to Monteverde, with the volcano behind you the whole way.
Days 5–7
Monteverde
Cloud-forest reserve at opening, hanging bridges, a night walk, and a dedicated quetzal morning in season with a specialist guide.
Day 8
Exit
Descent to San José or Liberia.
Conditions
La Fortuna is warm and wet, 22–31 °C. Monteverde is cool, windy, and often inside cloud, 14–22 °C. December to April is drier; Monteverde's wind peaks December to February. Arenal's summit is permanently obscured about as often as it is clear. A clear cone is luck, not a schedule item.
Fitness bar
Moderate. Lava-field and cloud-forest trails with uneven footing, some sustained gradient, and hanging bridges if you are comfortable with height.
Best months
December through April. Quetzal breeding season runs roughly March to June, which overlaps the tail of the dry window.
Private or small group
Private naturalist guiding, lodge-based at both ends. Small-group departures up to ten.
What to bring
A proper rain shell for Monteverde, which is windy and often inside cloud at 1,440 m, and lighter layers for La Fortuna at 250 m. Boots for uneven lava field and wet cloud-forest trail. Swim kit for the thermal springs.
Access and permits
The constraints that actually decide whether a date is possible.
- Arenal Volcano National Park trails stay on the lower flanks and the old flows. Summit access is closed and has been for many years.
- Monteverde's main reserve enforces a daily entry cap and opening-time entry is worth the early start.

What the price reflects
$5,800–8,600 for eight days covers private naturalist guiding at both ends, the lake crossing, reserve fees, and good lodges. Costa Rica is well served by shared shuttles and group tours at much lower cost — the difference here is the guide and the timing.
